Oil refineries are where we boil oil, and try not to burn it! Follow these steps to learn more.

Follow this link to find a simulation I made about boiling oil. Play around with heating and cooling the alkanes. Then, to get credit for this part of the exercise,
  • adjust the temperature to around room temperature (60-70 degrees Fahrenheit);
  • take a screenshot to show which molecules would boil away, or vaporize, at room temperature;
  • annotate the screenshot by writing the formula of the molecules that vaporized.

2. File Upload - Maximum Points: 2
Watch this short video clip to see where we boil oil.

To get credit for this part of the exercise, pause the video and take a screenshot when you can see:
  • a smokestack (evidence of the boiler);
  • pipes (transporting molecules from place to place);
  • storage tanks (where the different molecules are stored);
  • annotate the screenshot by labeling and pointing to these three things.

Follow this link to Google Maps , and find the route that oil tankers travel when they enter the Delaware Bay.

Zoom in to see oil refineries on the banks of the Delaware River (in Delaware, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania). To get credit for this part of the exercise, take two screenshots with evidence of 1: Boilers/Smokestacks, 2: Pipelines, and 3: Storage Tanks.
  • One screenshot should be an overhead view;
  • one screenshot should be a "Street-View" image (drag the orange stick-figure onto a street).
  • Annotate the images to label and point to the three structures listed above.
